Truth Chart (I) was launched in connection with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) for South Africa. The TRC was a court-like restorative justice body assembled after the abolition of apartheid. Witnesses who came forth to participate in as victims of gross human rights violations were invited to give statements about their experiences, and some were selected for public hearings. Perpetrators of violence could also give testimony and request amnesty from both civil and criminal prosecution. All these statements constitute the basis of the commission's findings in the final TRC report published on October 28, 1998. Truth Chart (I) is meant to supplement the final report of the TRC.
